AbleReach · 11 months agoHave you seen Becoming a Writer, by Dorthea Brande? It's a charming little book first published in 1934. Though she was focused on writers, I loved using her ideas for my drawings.
-
Mark Dykeman · 11 months agoNo, I should check that out.
-
William Stewart · 11 months agoJulia recommends writing long hand, but I've found that typing is easier (I'm a faster typist than a writer)
-
Mark Dykeman · 11 months agoBut is typing effective?
-
Ramkarthik · 11 months agoI think one of the main reasons of writing things down in a paper and not typing it in computer, is to move away from computer for a while. Sitting down in front of computer for a long time would almost always result in an unproductive day.
-
William Stewart · 11 months ago@Ramkarthik, fair point. The computer does distract me. The times when typing has worked, i'll launch straight into Evernote and go full-screen for the time I'm writing.

Barbara Swafford · 11 months agoI like the idea of morning pages. It's amazing what ideas pop into my head when I'm not under pressure.
-
Mark Dykeman · 11 months agoI must admit that I haven't done real morning pages for months, but I do seem to be keeping a paper journal almost daily
-
anaulin · 11 months agoGood tip, Mark. This "hanging out on the page", as Cameron calls it (in "The Right to Write", haven't read "The Artist's Way") has a truly wonderful effect (on me, anyways, YMMV, etc). Clears up my mind and energizes. Cameron equals it to a kind of meditation, and I think that is no exaggeration.

Mark Dykeman · 11 months agoThat's a good analogy, thanks!

nikki · 11 months agoI write directly on the computer so much that I forget that writing longhand seems to use different parts of my brain, or at the very least evokes word associations that don't come in the same way on the computer. Thanks for reminding me to go back to the pen and paper. I second the recommendation of Dorothea Brande's book--it is wonderful and as fresh and relevant today as when it was written.

Mark Dykeman · 11 months agoThanks for stopping by! I guess I've definitely got to check out Dorothea Brande's book now!
-
jake · 11 months agoI agree that writing helps you relieve surface thoughts, the ones that are important for the meantime, but not quite as deep as your mind is capable of thinking.

Swing Trading · 2 months agoInteresting post. I have stumbled this for my friends. Hope others find it as interesting as I did.
